“We literally spent a few months in early 2023, going around to tattoo artists and studio owners bargaining for their time, just to sit down and interview them about their business,” Lefkofsky recalls. The resounding feedback? Existing booking software and tools were inadequate, failing to account for the nuances of the tattoo industry.

With a clear vision in mind, the Porter team set out to create a platform that would revolutionize the way tattoo artists operate. At its core, Porter offers a comprehensive booking platform designed explicitly for the tattoo world, allowing artists to manage consultations, appointments, liability waivers, and more seamlessly.

But Porter goes beyond just booking. It’s an all-encompassing platform with point-of-sale hardware, customer relationship management (CRM) tools, marketing capabilities, and financial management features. This holistic approach empowers tattoo artists and studio owners to streamline their entire business within a single, intuitive platform.

“We built an all-in-one-suite with custom payment devices, marketing tools, and financial reporting designed specifically and only for the tattoo industry,” Lefkofsky explains. “So that a tattoo artist or a tattoo studio owner can come and run their entire business in one place gaining the ability to power their business with their data.”

For independent artists, Porter offers a streamlined solution for booking, calendar management, and payment processing, with a monthly subscription fee of $35 after a free trial period. Studio owners can opt for a more comprehensive package, which includes additional features like payroll management and employee scheduling at a monthly cost of $100 for studios with three or fewer artists, or $150 for larger studios.

As Lefkosky emphasizes, “We are completely dialed into the needs of our customers, constantly making changes to the product to better suit their business needs as artists and studio owners, based on their real-time feedback”

Tattoo artist and Porter user Deundre can confirm. “I get so many more bookings now. Porter makes it so easy for me to see what exactly a client wants with a description, photos, which area of the body, the size, the color. With other software, I used to have to gather all this information through DM,” Deundre continues, “A lot of bookings used to get lost in the conversation, or clients would stop replying. Grey Daze’s narrative begins in 1993, hailing from Phoenix, Arizona. The band, initially comprised of vocalist Chester Bennington, drummer Sean Dowdell, guitarist Jason Barnes and bassist Jonathan Krause, embarked on a musical journey that would ultimately transcend time. According to Dowdell, “Initially it was discussed when Chester brought it up on a phone call. It was his idea, and I was somewhat in shock when he threw it out there.” With original Grey Daze bassist Mace Beyers and guitarist Cristin Davis who joined the band in 2019, Dowdell would begin the process of finishing what they had started in 2017.

The pivotal moment in this resurrection came with the release of “Amends” in 2020, an album that breathed new life into Grey Daze’s catalog, and latterly, “The Phoenix” released in 2022. Using Bennington’s original vocal recordings from the ’90s, the band reimagined and rerecorded the music around his powerful voice. “Amends” not only paid tribute to the late singer. Dowdell explains that making the album was grounded in finishing something important to their departed friend. “When Chester passed away, we were already in the middle of working on the music with Producer Sylvia Massey and had five new songs he had written for the band. It took me several months to figure out how to try and complete the music. Initially, it was just something we wanted to finish. We weren’t thinking about record deals or playing live, etc. We simply wanted to finish the music we had that had been wiped off the planet by Warner Brothers so many years prior.”

The album, featuring tracks like “Sickness” and “What’s in the Eye,” demonstrated the timeless relevance of Grey Daze’s music. The lyrics, often introspective and emotionally charged, offered a window into the band’s collective psyche, touching on themes of pain, self-discovery and the human condition. Grey Daze’s journey embodies the concept of artistic resurrection, a theme mirrored in their music. The fusion of Chester’s haunting vocals with the revitalized instrumentation showcased the band’s commitment to preserving their legacy while simultaneously propelling it into the future. Dowdell says of the making of the album, “It was meaningful for us and for what we felt like was an opportunity to connect some of Chester’s friends musically that hadn’t really had the opportunity to record original music with him. All the people that we were involved with loved Chester and really resonated with, not only his musical ability, but his incredible personality and compassion as a human.” The album not only takes risks with its experimental nature, but also takes risks when the band takes to the stage for live performances. Cris Hodges was brought in as the touring vocalist for Grey Daze to capture the emotional delivery of the band’s music. The band, with Hodges on vocals, Davis, Beyers, and Dowdell, has already put the new music to the test with a well-received performance at Phoenix, Arizona’s 2023 U-Fest, and subsequent shows in California.

Grey Daze’s journey is one of tragedy, resilience and musical innovation. “Amends” and latterly “The Phoenix,” serve as a testament to the enduring power of Grey Daze’s music. Stop by the one stop shop, Boston Barber & Tattoo Co

From a very young age, Robert Dello Russo knew he would become a Master Barber. After all, he started honing his craft in Boston’s North End when he was just 12 years old. What he never could have known is that he would attract the attention of numerous celebrities who would come for a haircut and stay for a tattoo.

In 2007, Dello Russo purchased a former watch repair shop/travel agency location in the North End and transformed it into a barber shop. Soon after that, Boston Barber & Tattoo Co. was created.

“At first, there was only one chair in the shop, but then I kept adding more,” he said in a recent phone interview. “We have been tattooing 13 of the 17 years we have been open.”

How did he come up with the idea to open a barber shop, tattoo parlor and coffee shop in one location?

“Tattoos were on the up and coming when we decided to open,” Dello Russo said. “I had to go before multiple Boards for approval. They were very strict on how things look because they wanted to keep the integrity of the neighborhood. We became the first and only tattoo shop in the North End. In 2005, Starbucks was becoming huge around here. I grew up in the North End around coffee shops, but Starbucks made coffee fancy for everyone. When people would come in for a haircut and there was a wait, they would leave to go grab a cup of coffee. Some wouldn’t come back, so I thought, how cool would it be to have all these things under one roof?”

The 47-year-old now has a staff of 10 Master Barbers, nine tattoo artists and four operations employees. The shop also includes a full-service coffee bar to make it easy for patrons to grab a coffee or espresso.

“The barber shop looks more like a cigar lounge,” he said. “It’s beautiful. We ended up taking over a former nail shop on the second floor where the tattoo shop is now located. We are proud to be the first tattoo shop to open in Boston. It was illegal for 86 years until the ban was lifted in 2000.”

Since opening the tattoo parlor, Dello Russo quickly gained a celebrity following.

“It all started with Milan Lucic of the Boston Bruins,” he said. “He was the first one to come and get a tattoo. We have tattooed almost all of them since 2011. When they won the Stanley Cup that year, they brought it to the shop. It was incredible. I have to give Lucic a lot of credit because he plugged me everywhere. He knew he was helping me, and I could see that. I am still close friends with him today.”

In addition to Bruins legends Brad Marchand, David Pastrnak, and Patrice Bergeron, Dello Russo’s shop has attracted stars from the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots and some of the biggest names in entertainment.

“Jonathan Papelbon has been here,” he said. “Jakobi Meyers got a full leg sleeve. Reebok contacted me because they wanted to do a cross promotion with Conor McGregor and his Proper 12 whiskey, so we cut his hair.”

What does Dello Russo think has been the secret to his success? “I have to attest to my artists,” he said. “They are amazing at their craft and great at social media. I think I have a good strategic way of picking out the right team. I make sure the artists know they are part of the family. I’m a hands-on owner. I’m not detached from my business. We have an extremely personal relationship with each other and that goes a long way. It’s all about your team. Once you find out what they are good at, you can make sure it operates correctly from there.”

As for his customers, Dello Russo wants to ensure they have a memorable experience whether stepping into the barber shop, café or tattoo parlor.

“You’re going to a beautiful place in the North End and it’s such a special neighborhood to be in,” he said. “The unsung heroes are our front desk people. It’s not easy dealing with people calling 100 times, coming in to see things 1,000 times and then not getting the tattoo, but that’s the nature of the business.”

In addition to his North End location, Dello Russo also owns and operates a second Boston shop in Beacon Hill. “That location has been in business since 1927 where John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy would get their hair cut each week,” he said. “That location is just a barber shop.”

While Dello Russo is not a tattoo artist, he admits he has been artistic his entire life. “I am a barber by trade, but I have always been ahead of the curve with style,” he said. “I knew I wanted to do something completely different, and it worked despite what people told me. It has all brought me to where I am today.”
