Wedding Bands Tattoo by Jesse Phillips

Forest Couple tattoo on Finger by Jesse Phillips
Tattoo by Jesse Phillips

This couple decided to ditch the rings and go with something very meaningful and permanent – a wedding band finger tattoo representing a forest. Their tattoo artist Jessie Phillips did a great job with this detailed forest scene done in black ink only. Even though fingers get a lot of ware and tare, and will fade over time, done in black ink only will help with longevity.

Interview with Talented Realism Artist Potter Seunghyun Jo

Potter Seunghyun Jo (@seunghyunjotattoos) is an incredibly talented black and grey realism artist working out of Toronto, Canada.

He creates very solid work that is built to last and stand the test of time.

I got the chance to interview him and talk about a variety of subjects including the importance of black ink on a tattoo, innovation in the industry, a certain pop star he got acquainted with, and more.

Hope you guys enjoy the read, thanks for looking.

Although I have yet to get the pleasure, your work strikes me as the type that looks even better in person. Can you talk to me a little bit about what goes into creating a tattoo that is built to stand the test of time?

For me, the key to making a good tattoo that also lasts is focusing on the black. That doesn’t mean using a lot or too much black, but more about balance in highlights and of course, making sure the client knows about good tattoo aftercare.

When did you first make your way into this industry? What have been a few of the most drastic changes you’ve seen since then?

I started tattooing about 12 years ago and started my career in Seoul, South Korea. At that time and even now, tattooing is illegal without a medical license. I moved to Canada about 7 years ago and met so many great clients, travelled around the world meeting so many great artists and learned a lot. Social media has had such a big impact on the tattoo industry. When I started, all we had was word of mouth and magazines to learn. Now, information is everywhere. There are so many innovative products and new ways to learn about tattooing, artists, etc. That doesn’t mean everything has gotten better, but definitely a lot of positives and negatives.

Three changes you predict/hope to see in the industry in the next 3-5 years?

There has been so much innovation in this industry over the last decade, but sometimes it can feel like we forget about tattoo culture and its history. Looking forward isn’t a bad thing, but our industry is what it is because of the past- all the great artists, culture, tattoo genres, they should never be forgotten. No matter the industry or career, we have to appreciate its history. Social media has done alot for the industry and making tattoos popular, but I would love to see more face-to-face events/interactions like conventions, etc.

If you could go back to when you first started tattooing, and give yourself three specific key pieces of advice, what might those be?

I’ve made a  lot of mistakes when I started out and even now, so definitely a lot of things I could say. But, mistakes are important too, because that’s how I learned. These days there’s a lot of good information that’s easily accessible if you want to make it as a tattoo artist, I’m not saying it’s not good, but sometimes it’s better to learn the hard way through trial and error. Lastly, you learn alot about yourself when you’re out of your comfort zone. I moved to Canada with no job, very bad English and coming from a country where tattooing was pretty much illegal, it was super difficult to adjust in a completely different country, but in a way, it made me work harder and gave me motivation. I just wanted to know that I could do whatever I needed.

How has tattooing impacted your mental health/well-being?

Coming up in the tattoo industry can be pretty competitive. There’s always new talent and so many amazing artists. Before I started tattooing, I didn’t really like trying new things or taking risks, but after becoming an artist and being in this industry that’s so competitive, it’s definitely pushed me to take more risks.

Craziest or most bizarre experience with a client so far? And goofiest email inquiry you ever received?

My friend gave my number to someone’s manager and told me they’d contact me for a tattoo. They called me and I basically said no, because it was 4 in the morning…But then  they called me back the next day. I ended up tattooing Justin Bieber for the next 3 weeks.

Potter with Justin Bieber

If you could swap tattoo for tattoo with any artist in the industry tomorrow, who would that be?

 Mr. Cartoon

Best piece of advice for all of your future clients?

Know what you want, but be open-minded.

When, how, and why did you fall in love with the beautiful art of tattooing?

About 15 years ago, I worked at a club and I was really into the fashion scene. A guy I knew, who had really sick style got a tattoo- which was really bold at the time because it wasn’t that common in Korea. I thought it was so cool and thought maybe I could do that and be a part of that industry. I started asking lots of questions and that’s where it started.

If you were to spend one year trying out a different style of tattooing than realism, what might that be and why?

I love chicano style tattoos, because there’s strength behind that style. I love the design, the specialized cholo script and the simplicity. It’s super soft, but solid shading.

Luna Lucero the beautiful tattoo artist with her bold and timeless tattoos

It all started with her passion as a tattoo collector which led her to get her body completely covered in tattoos. All strictly bold and Traditional, in that timeless style with which she identifies, like those beautiful women who have also become her reference subject as a tattoo artist.

Meet Luna Lucero, the Vancouver girl who you will soon see on the pages of Tattoo Life with her incredible tattoos.

Hi Luna, pleased to meet you here on Tattoo Life. An extensive article about you as a tattoo artist will be published soon, but in this chat I would like to hear more from you about yourself. Shall we start by presenting you to our readers?
My name is Luna Lucero, I was born and raised here in Canada on Vancouver island. I’ve been painting and drawing since I was a small child and started pursuing art as a career with absolutely no guidance except from myself.

Luna Lucero, photo by Sergey @exquisite.photographe

At the age of 16. I dropped out of high school, moved out and started doing commission paintings.

Around this time I also started getting tattooed, hanging out with tattooers and in tattoo shops.

That was when I realized that my dreams of being a painter had shifted to wanting to be a tattooer. I spent many years searching for an apprenticeship after that. I finally got one when I was 22 after I moved home from living in Europe for a few years and having a brief unsuccessful apprenticeship in Barcelona. I’ve been tattooing now for 5 years, just opened my own studio, done some conventions internationally and now I’m in Tattoo Life magazine!

Did your passion for tattoo first start as a tattoo collector or tattoo artist?
My passion started as a collector I suppose. I was almost fully covered in tattoos before I started tattooing and I didn’t really know much about tattooing until I started getting tattooed because neither of my parents had any or any of my family members. But relating it back to my own art work it seemed like it was the absolute perfect path for me to follow.

Plus the people who I was friends with and getting tattooed by were the perfect weirdos I could relate to.

You have all Traditional tattoos. Why this choice?
I love tattoos that look like tattoos. I love the history, plus most of my tattoos are done by people I consider to be my friends who happen to work in that style. I like the look of bold tough tattoos on women.

When did your career as a tattoo artist begin?
When I was 22 in 2018 working in a shop in Duncan BC called Modern Tradition where I did my apprenticeship under Albert Caine. Albert has taught some of the island’s and Canada’s best tattooers. Thank you Albert for the opportunity.

You are very feminine in your look and love women with their shapes and beauty. Is this what you like to express in your art?
Yes! I’ve always loved painting and drawing women, as well as always admired women for how tough and beautiful they are. And I also love how much expression and mystery you can portray through a portrait.

We talk extensively about your art in the article about you as a tattoo artist, but here I would like you to tell us what it’s like for you as a woman in the tattoo industry.
I feel like I came into tattooing at a time where it had changed a lot. There are a lot more women absolutely killing it in the industry. I have faced some issues myself but if anything, what didn’t kill me made me tougher.

Last question: why do the women you tattoo look like you?
I’ve gotten this many times! I’ve always drawn women mostly with dark hair and classic features and usually 50s era hairstyle and makeup. I think I might just do myself up more to match them than the other way around.

The artwork around this area can be easily covered, making it a prime spot for intimate quotes and personal images. You’ll want to choose a small, simple piece, as the area can be painful to tattoo. Short quotes, flocks of birds, and curvy floral artwork can be great choices, but don’t be afraid to try initials or coordinates if you’re worried about pain.

A back tattoo is a feminine and versatile design that uses a large area for a cute and modern result. Although it is more common to see detailed pieces on the shoulder blades, upper back and side back tattoos can be ideal for delicate pieces. Rihanna adds a new tattoo to her collection of body art, a small cross on her collar bone area. The singer went to her favorite tattoo artist, Bang Bang, in New York City on Thursday, March 15 to get inked. Bang Bang is opening his new tattoo parlor on the Lower East Side.

“She loved it,” Bang Bang said. “She always flips out [when it’s done] and jumps up and down like a 16-year-old girl getting her first car.”

Bang Bang, who has been tattooing since age 19, has done 12 other tattoos for Rihanna, such as the “Shhh” tattoo on her finger. The artist has inked the likes of Katy Perry, Russell Brand, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale. He will open a new tattoo parlor on the Lower East Side this spring, calling it “the largest tattoo shop in New York City.”

It was only late January that Rihanna had a tattoo. She got the words “Thug Life” tattooed on her knuckles.
